Thomas Gravemaker, who has extensive experience and knowledge in letterpress and graphic design, worked for many years in the UK with various publishers – including several years as a senior designer at Thames & Hudson – and in France, first as studio manager in a design group, before setting up his own studio (www.tomscot.org). He works on book and exhibition design, catalogues and publicity material for clients such as Flammarion, the Réunion des Musées nationaux, Mollat, musée Carnavalet, musée de l’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Maison de Victor Hugo, The National Galleries of Scotland and many others.
His passion for letterpress began prior to his training at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and has developed over the years. During these years, he has worked on private commissions, taught letterpress, lectured and talked at various conferences and events.
He has – after having spent many years in London, Paris and Edinburgh – returned to Amsterdam to take further and refine his craftmanship in his fascinating workshop situated in the centre of the city. Here, he shares his wide knowledge and passion of letterpress and combines new methods with the old ones to create inspiring products that are always executed to a high standard, both technically and aesthetically.
Apart from teaching in the Netherlands, Thomas also teaches and lectures in other countries and is actively involved in many international activities and projects within the world of letterpress printing.
Thomas collaborates closely with his partner Christine, who trained at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in graphics and fashion. Christine worked in fashion design, trend forecasting and as a design consultant. She was contributing editor to Frame magazine for many years.
She continues to write on design, health and well-being for various magazines and publications.
